Turning everyday living into something golden
Hi, I’m Dean and I’m the owner of Golden Electrical Co. I live in Glenbrook NSW with my wife and our Golden Retriever, Ralphie. We’ve both grown up and lived in the Mountains most of our lives and I attended Winmalee Primary and High School. We love the Blue Mountains and hope to stay here the rest of our lives.

Things to think about before calling an electrician
Does the area of work contain asbestos?
Approximately one in three homes in Australia still contain asbestos. If you have a house built or renovated before 1990, there’s a high chance that your house contains asbestos. Areas where it was commonly used include switchboards, eaves, bathroom & kitchen ceilings and walls, flooring, and roofing insulation.
Asbestos can be extremely harmful if disturbed (e.g. by drilling or cutting), as its microscopic fibres can be released into the air and inhaled. This can cause a range of health problems, including lung cancer.
As electricians, improper handling of asbestos-containing materials isn’t just dangerous for us, it can expose you and your whole household to serious health risks. That’s why it’s extremely important to identify any asbestos in your home before starting renovations. If you’re unsure whether your home has asbestos in it, it’s always best to have a licensed asbestos assessor look at it before work is carried out.
Is your switchboard up to date?
Many houses still have ceramic fuses or circuit breakers controlling their circuits. As electricians, we are required to follow the rules and regulations outlined in the Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000). The rule 2.6.3.2.5 states that if a circuit has any additions/extensions/relocations, then the circuit needs to be brought up to the most recent form of circuit protection. This type of protection is called an RCBO. It protects both the circuit and anyone in the house, unlike fuses and old model circuit breakers, which only protect the circuit from pulling too much power. This means that some electrical works in your home may also require upgrading the fuses in your switchboard.
